LOOKING FORWARD – The Artwork of Kirk Newman

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 12.02.45 PMFrom the moment he touched ceramics after he returned home from World War II, Kirk Newman impacted arts, culture, and the people around him through sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. He dedicated his life to being an educator, and most notably created the Kirk Newman School at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. His sensitivity to the lives of others led his art down a path of consistently examining the risk, anxiety, and humor of the business world. In his career, Newman saw his artwork prominently installed in international cities, including as Hong Kong and Toronto, as well as throughout the region.

Looking Forward: The Artwork of Kirk Newman provides a fresh look at the themes of his prolific career as an artist. Timeless qualities and diverse techniques show that beyond his career empowering education in the arts, Newman’s own observations and empathetic feelings serve up a delightful and thoughtful examination of the modern world.

Mission

The UICA builds creative community by fostering new forms of expression, promoting collaboration, and providing genuine experiences with contemporary art.

Guiding Principles

Through compelling presentations, studio programs, community programs, and youth development, we actively challenge both artists and audiences to new levels of dialogue, creative pursuit, reflection, and illumination. UICA initiates conversation in response to visual art, music, film, literature, dance, and performance art featuring regional, national, and international artists.

How You Can Help

The Kirk Newman Exhibition at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts has many components for you to get involved with at any level. UICA is asking for your support today in the following areas:

Share your personal and professional mailing lists
We would like to reach as many people as possible with exhibition invitations and announcements. Can you provide us with a mailing list and email list of friends, family and colleagues who you’d like to attend?

Underwrite a Kirk Newman evening at UICA during the exhibition
UICA will host a free, ticketed reception for 120 guests on December 12. We look forward to providing an interactive, personal evening where guests can take in the exhibition with Kirk in attendance, hear him speak about his work, and enjoy delicious food and drink. Can you underwrite this event with a contribution of $500 or more?

Corporate sponsorship or personal support of the exhibition at large
Your contribution to UICA is an investment in Michigan’s culture, education, and economy that pays dividends to the community right away, and well into the future. Can you support the Kirk Newman exhibition at UICA with a tax-deductible donation of $1,000 or more?
